This is a fairly new development, as I've always loved flowers and plants, but I didn't LOVE them until the last few years. All spring and summer I spend copious amounts of time adding to my garden, tending to my garden, rearranging my garden, and plotting about the newest addition to my garden. By the time the cold weather rolls around, the garden is gone and the empty spaces look so forlorn and empty. And so...
It was time to bring my newfound obsession indoors. This fall aI began to collect some inside plants that I hoped would liven up our sunroom and at least give a hint of greenery to our surroundings. Apparently, amongst those who really know their inside plants, the hottest houseplant on the scene is the Pilea peperomiodes.
Wikipedia tells us:
Pilea peperomioides, known as Chinese money plant, pancake plant, lefse plant, or missionary plant, is a species of flowering plants in the family Urticaceae, native to Yunnan Province in southern China. Growing to 30 cm (12 in) tall and wide, it is an erect, succulent, evergreen perennial, with round, dark green, peltate leaves up to 10 cm (4 in) in diameter on a long petiole.[1]
It's pretty hard to come by in the US, but you can get them from other gardeners who send a cutting to you. When I saw that a friend was selling her "babies" to new homes I had to give it a try. I've been tending to mine in the little cup she sent it in, but finally got it planted in a more spacious home today. Hopefully it will actually flourish and help me make the leap from outdoor to indoor plant person as well.
